Origin of Life Path Numbers: From Ancient Times to Nowadays
You notice the same numbers again and again. Dates, receipts, prices, watches. Everywhere and every time your eye catches a digit or number. And you don’t know why some dates bring you luck while others don’t.
One has looked for meaning in numbers for thousands of years. Let’s check the people, dates, and ideas behind Life Path Numbers.
The History of Numerology
Almost everybody knows Pythagoras for his theorem. Fewer people know he was a “father of numbers.” He believed strings of different lengths could produce totally different sounds.
Ancient Greek number philosophy was deeper than just checking a birthday in a calculator. Andrew Gregory explains much in The Pythagoreans: Number and Numerology.
In 1908, L. Dow Balliett wrote The Philosophy of Numbers: Their Tone and Colors. She found the connection between numbers, sounds, colors, and names.
How to Calculate?
Life Path Number calculation method adds the month, day, and year separately. For November 12, 1972, the calculation is 12 + 11 + 19 = 42, where 11 is a Master Number.
Another method adds every digit: 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 2 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6.

Beijing opened the Summer Olympics on August 8, 2008, at 8p.m. The organizers chose this time because many people in China see the number 8 as a sign of luck and wealth. You can watch the event in the official Olympics video archive.
Different Numbers, Different People: Why?
Two people with the same Life Path Number can live very different lives. One may run a company, while the other helps people. In 1949, psychologist Bertram Forer found that people often see general personality descriptions as personal. Psychologists call this the Barnum effect.
What to Do With Your Number?
Have you ever learned a new word and started seeing it? The same thing with numbers. Psychologists call it the frequency illusion. There’s no scientific explanation, but there’s a rule that often works.
Thoughts become words, words become actions, actions make destiny.
